While the shift from summer to winter isn’t as dramatic in Ocala, Florida, as some other parts of the country, you may have concerns about how to stay comfortable as the seasons change. Changing air filters, checking the thermostat and scheduling HVAC maintenance are ways you can stay comfy while making seasonal transitions.
Clean or Change the Air Filter
Depending on the type of HVAC filter you use, you may need to clean or replace it at least every three months. In other words, about once every season.
With Halloween just around the corner, it’s a good reminder to check that air filter and prepare it for another season so you can boost your system’s airflow and maintain a healthy indoor air quality. Fortunately, tackling the air filter is one HVAC chore you can handle yourself.
For reusable filters, dust or vacuum it thoroughly. If needed, wash it with soap and water. Most homeowners use disposable filters, though.
If you use a disposable filter, simply remove and replace it with a fresh one. Just be sure to vacuum the air vent and the area around the duct opening before putting in a new filter.
When in doubt, check your air filter once a month for signs of blockage. If it looks clogged or extra dirty, err on the side of caution and replace it early. If you have pets, you may need to change it every 30 days to keep pet dander and fur in check.
Check the Thermostat
Despite Florida’s subtle temperature changes between seasons, the lows can get quite chilly during the winter. Now’s the time to reevaluate your thermostat settings to see if you need to make any changes.
During the winter, you can save energy and keep your utility bills in check by setting your thermostat to 68 degrees. This may seem low, especially if you’re cold-natured. But you can buy a programmable thermostat and program it to dip to 68 degrees when you aren’t at home.
Regardless of how you set the thermostat, you should also check the unit itself to make sure it’s properly calibrated. Tape a thermometer to the wall a few inches from the thermostat. Wait about 15 minutes for the mercury to stabilize, and compare the readings.
If they’re off by more than one degree, you’ll need to clean the thermostat and make sure the mercury vial inside is straight. If your thermostat doesn’t have a mercury vial, refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to calibrate the unit.
Schedule HVAC Maintenance
Fall is the perfect time to schedule your annual HVAC service, because you can ensure your system is ready for the cooler winter ahead. And don’t forget that summer is a tough time for an air conditioner in Florida. After all that work, it’s time for a professional to make sure everything is still in working order.
Annual HVAC maintenance can help you save money in the long run by prolonging the system’s life. Regular inspections and minor repairs prevent major disasters, including carbon monoxide leaks that can lead to CO poisoning or worse. Your HVAC service technician will test your system’s electrical connections, clean the condenser, lubricate components and even clean your ducts if you request the add-on service.
Remember, just because your system is new doesn’t mean it doesn’t need maintenance. In fact, failing to adhere to your annual maintenance agreement can void your manufacturer’s warranty.
