Make Your Air Conditioner More Efficient

How to Make Your Air Conditioner More Efficient

October 4, 2018

Are your utility bills higher than you’d like? If you’re paying too much for cooling in your Ocala, Florida, home, there are several things that you can do to lower your energy expenses. Try these tactics to make your air conditioner more efficient and get outstanding comfort for less:

Make Sure Your Unit is Properly Sized

Many homeowners assume their HVAC systems are properly sized without ever having them inspected by a professional. If you didn’t choose the air conditioner in your home, you may be surprised to find that the home’s previous owner or builder chose the system without proper consideration for square footage and layout.

Have one of our technicians check your unit and perform a Manual J calculation for your home to make sure it’s the right size. Upgrading to a larger or smaller air conditioner can dramatically improve efficiency. As a result, you’ll cut your energy waste and expenses.

Set the Thermostat Properly

Adjust your thermostat so you’re using less energy when you’re away from the home. You can also set your temperatures higher at night while you’re sleeping. Compensate with lighter bedding and pajamas.

Consider using a ceiling fan to increase your comfort without increasing utility bills. In the summer, your ceiling fans should rotate in a counterclockwise direction. In the winter, they should rotate in a clockwise direction.

Maintaining these set temperatures for a period of at least eight hours at a time will deliver the best efficiency. For every degree higher or lower you set your thermostat, depending on the season, you can save as much as 3 percent on your energy bills. If you want to take the hard work out of improving efficiency and saving money, consider upgrading to a programmable or a smart thermostat. By doing so, you’ll be able to optimize your home’s temperatures even more.

Schedule Regular HVAC Maintenance

Schedule annual maintenance visits for your heating and cooling systems. During these tune-ups, our service technicians will carefully:

  • Inspect your unit
  • Adjust key components
  • Cleaning interior parts
  • Tighten electrical connections
  • Lubricate moving parts

An air conditioner that’s well-maintained will have fewer repair needs, last longer and provide better efficiency.
