3 HVAC Sounds That Mean Trouble

December 21, 2018

Your HVAC system is the backbone of your home in Ocala, Florida. Keeping it running efficiently is crucial throughout the year. Often, your HVAC system will tell you when there’s a problem you should address. Here are three sounds that might signal trouble for your HVAC system:

Rattling

When you hear rattling noises coming from your HVAC system, there could be a few problems. The noise usually is a sign that something in the system has come loose. You should address this issue immediately because it probably means a part is broken. That part could move around and cause more damage in the HVAC system.

The rattling could also be from loose motor mounts, bearings, or a blower being out of alignment. If you hear rattling, shut down your system and contact your HVAC service technician. Otherwise, you risk further damage and higher repair costs.

Hissing

Hissing noises typically mean air is escaping from your system. If you hear the noise coming from inside your walls, it’s most likely a leak in your duct. Hissing close to air vents could be an issue with your filter being improperly seated or the wrong size.

These issues aren’t immediate problems, and a filter check could be all you need. However, if you replace the filter and are still hearing the noise, it may be time to contact an HVAC specialist to check for duct leaks or leaks in the lines that can be dangerous.

Squealing

A squealing noise often indicates problems with your HVAC motor. Typically, screeching or squealing comes from bad bearings or frayed or worn belts. The system’s motor relies on these items to work as it should. It’s important to have them replaced right away to reduce the risk of breakdown. Don’t try to lubricate the HVAC belts yourself. They should be thoroughly checked by a service technician to make sure they’re functioning properly.
