Ocala is a mid-sized city in north-central Florida and is the county seat of Marion County. The city center is just east of Interstate 75 along U.S. Highway 301. It is about an hour north of Tampa and half an hour south of Gainesville.
History
Ocala was built on the former home of the Timucuan Indians. Its name comes from Ocali, which is what the Timucuan called their village. It was incorporated as a town on February 4, 1869, and it became a city on January 28, 1885. Ocala first developed as the military outpost of Fort King, which was established to protect settlers from the Seminole Indians. After the Second Seminole War, it became the courthouse for Marion County and settlement began to grow.
Once the railroad arrived in 1891, Ocala saw significant economic expansion. Early on, it was an important center of citrus production. During the twentieth century, it began to attract tourists with a growing number of attractions. It also became a center for breeding thoroughbred horses.
Things to Do
Silver Springs is a nature park most known for its glass bottom boat rides. In the fall of 2013, it was turned over to the State of Florida, and many of its other rides and attractions were removed to place a greater emphasis on nature. Wild Waters Water Park is located at Silver Springs and features a number of slides and other rides. Silver River State Park is a large park with miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horses. Canoeing and camping are also available.
Demographics
Ocala has a population of just under 57,000. Its demographics closely mirror the averages for the entire state of Florida. About 22 percent of its residents are under the age of 18, and 17 percent of the population are senior citizens over the age of 65. It is a stable city, with about 75 percent of its residents having lived in the same home one year or longer. Over half own their own homes. The median household income is about $37,000. About 21 percent of the population has a bachelor’s degree, and roughly the same amount live below the poverty level.
Climate
Ocala has a hot and humid climate like the rest of Florida. There are frequent afternoon thunderstorms during the summer. It is far enough inland to not see the worst effects of hurricanes and tropical storms, but still sees high winds and heavy rains when they pass over the state. It rains an average of 118 days per year, and the average annual rainfall is 52 inches. There are 233 sunny days each year. The average July high is 92 degrees, and the average January low is 46 degrees.
